JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) –
The Jackson City Council voted 6 to 1 Tuesday night to approve and support a resolution for the Pearl River Flood Control Project, more commonly known as the One Lake Development.
Supporters say the purpose of the project is to prevent another devastating event like the Easter Flood of 1979 and the flood of 1983.
To control water levels of the Pearl River in the metro, the plan is to dig out and widen the river channel to create areas for parks, boat access points and riverfront development.
We talked with council member De’Keither Stamps Tuesday night, who says there are serious concerns that must be worked out.
“Anytime, any new organizations want to tax and govern inside the City of Jackson," said Stamps. "We must take a serious look at it. The environmental impacts, and the effects on our down stream and up stream neighbors."
Councilman Kenneth Stokes was the lone vote against the resolution.
